Faith, the Environment, and Advocacy

As people of faith, we recognize that the earth and all of creation is "very good," (Genesis 1:31), that "Nature reflects the qualities and attributes of God" (Baha'i faith statement). While we are stewards, the Earth, ultimately does not belong to us.  Because, "To [Allah] belongs what is in the heavens and on earth and all between them and all beneath the soil" (Sura 20:6).

People of faith historically have been agents of change and advocates of justice for the “least among us.” Interfaith Power & Light works to uphold this legacy, and empower all people to help the environment and work for policies that reflect a care for all of God’s creation.

Current Policy Priorities

At Virginia Interfaith Power & Light (as well as the Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy) we continue this work on local and national levels. We strive to deepen the connection between faith and environmental justice.  We empower the faith community to discuss and act on critical issues and legislation around the following areas:

Energy Efficiency

Energy efficiency is the cheapest and quickest way to meet our growing energy demands, conserve resources, and save money.

Clean, Renewable Energy

Using local, clean energy in Virginia such as wind, solar, and biomass will allow us to leave a legacy of leadership for future generations and help us become energy independent.

Keep the Ban on Uranium

Currently, the uranium industry is trying to lift the statewide ban on the mining of uranium, the milling of yellowcake, and the disposal of radioactive waste in Virginia.
