Why Weatherize?

Originally, weatherization was simply the process of upgrading and retrofitting a building to better protect against the elements.  In recent years, it has also come to encompass the process of making a building more energy efficient.

There are two main benefits of developing a robust weatherization program for a congregation:  the long-term cost savings, and the immediate carbon footprint reduction.

Just as important, however, is the reduction of harmful emissions your building generates through its power use.  This results in a whole host of benefits regionally such as an increase in air quality, but also globally by reducing humanity's contribution to climate change.

Virginia Interfaith Power & Light has launched a series of workshops to incentivize and encourage energy efficiency at home and at worship facilities.  Recognizing the unique opportunities and challenges in retrofitting worship facilities and homes, our Energy Efficiency Stewardship Workshops advocate for education and action.

Below is an example of the three-tier process that allows a congregation to take first steps towards weatherization energy efficiency.

Tier I - Basic Electrical

The first tier of our weatherization program begins with a free, initial energy audit, performed by one of our partner service providers.  In addition, we will establish an energy-use baseline through a review of your utility bills for the past 12 months. After this, we will replace those items which have a short-term return-on-investment (ROI).  The result will be immediate savings in your monthly bills, all at little to no cost to the congregation.

Tier II - HVAC Systems

The second tier of our program is centered around Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system evaluation and upgrade, which typically have longer ROI than the Tier I upgrades due to their up-front costs. Such upgrades can include window replacement,  weather stripping deployment, insulation improvement or more significant and costly upgrades. In order to maximize value, we also perform a more in-depth audit at this stage.

Tier III - Energy Generation and Capital Projects

The third and final tier of our program is the most ambitious, and also the most costly.  Having greatly boosted energy efficiency, we then look to renewable methods of energy generation, such as solar, wind, or geothermal.  These projects are highly technical, and the typical ROI is between 20-25 years.  In addition, any major capital improvements, such as the replacement of an industrial boiler system, may fall into this category.  Congregations that complete this tier of upgrades not only become partially energy independent, but also become visible examples within their community of the benefits, the need and the possibility of a sustainable society.
